Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection that can cause tooth loss
and medical problems (see Health & Your Gums). However its very
treatable in its early stages when combined with good patient oral
hygiene and a proper diet. If any of the following symptoms are present
you may need treatment:
Gums that are tender, bleed easily and/or swollen
A receding gumline
Pus present between the teeth and gums when pressed
Frequent bad breath
Loose permanent teeth
Changes in the way your teeth or partial dentures fit together
Periodontal scaling and root planing eliminates pockets of infection
beneath the gums and allows them to heal. Scaling removes plaque,
calculus, food debris, and pus that have built up in the infected pockets.
Root planing smoothes and cleans tooth root surfaces so gum tissue
can reattach to the teeth. Microsurgical procedures can help reduce
pockets or regenerate lost bone support. We specialize in performing
treatments comfortably. During procedures, we allow for more time
than many offices. This allows a gentle thorough approach, and a painless
recovery. Fluoride is used to harden the root surface and help prevent
future decay.
These treatments are well worth the effort. They not only help you keep
your teeth and preserve your smile, they may even help you live longer
by improving your overall health.
